The bear is a powerful animal, strong and fierce. It is Berlin's symbol, and like Berlin, it stands for tough independence and individualism. With wide, powerful paws, the bear symbol governs the city. Ola's Pink Bear artwork draws on the energy of this iconic creature.
The history of the Berlin Bear is not clear. It used to be an eagle together with a bear referencing Prussia and Brandenburg for a long time. But since 1280, a two bears symbol started to get adhesion and frequently mentioned. It is also believed that the first part of the city name comes from the word "Bär" - bear in German. So it is not a surprise to have the mighty beast stand upright on the official state emblems. The current flag and coat of arms depict the animal profile. The figure was affirmed for use for both in 1954 by West Germany.
